Oskar Levi Strauss was a clothing manufacturer of German-Jewish descent who emigrated to America in 1847. He started a trading firm in San Francisco in 1853 for fabrics and clothing, among other things. In 1872, he partnered with tailor Jacob Davis of Reno, Nevada. Davis reinforced denim trousers with "rivets" also known as rivets to prevent trouser pockets tearing out. Davis had the rivet invention registered in 1873 together with his denim supplier and financier of the patent Levi Strauss.
Jeans eventually became the most popular garment on earth! In 1965, Levi Strauss & Co built its first factories in Europe and Asia. Levi Strauss died on 26 September 1902. His four cousins took over the company.
